When using rotary drilling rigs in sandy layers, mud slurry is definitely used for wall protection. The problem arises because sand inevitably mixes with the mud slurry during construction. Mud slurry is generally recycled. When repeatedly used mud slurry is injected into the hole, after several hours of settling, sand will settle to the bottom, causing sediment buildup. During drilling, when the drill is pulled out, mud and sand can easily flow out from the drill bit's drain port and mix with the mud slurry, remaining in the hole and causing excessively thick sediment.

After analyzing the causes, we know how to prevent this. During rotary drilling rig construction, two mud pits are used for mud management: a storage pit and a sedimentation pit. When the mud returns from the borehole, it first flows through the sedimentation pit, settling a large amount of sand, before flowing into the storage pit. When drilling through sandy layers, the drilling depth is controlled, using light pressure, slow speed, and thick mud to minimize sand outflow. A 20-30cm allowance can be left before the final hole depth, allowing it to stand for about half an hour before using a slag-removing drill bit to excavate to the designed depth.
