Four Common Misconceptions About Lubricating Rotary Drilling Rigs

I. Oil Leakage, Should I Replace the Seal?

In hydraulic systems, most oil leaks are caused by seal failure. Seals rely on elasticity (pressure) for sealing. After installation, without oil pressure, the seal's elasticity should provide pre-pressure to the contact surface, meaning its cross-section should undergo a certain degree of compression deformation. Under oil pressure, it is pressed to one side of the groove, relying on its elasticity to achieve a seal. When replacing a seal, it is crucial to strictly follow the instructions and select a seal of the same size; otherwise, proper tightness and other requirements cannot be guaranteed. Special attention should be paid to never using used seals. When using a new seal, its surface quality should be carefully inspected. It can only be used after confirming the absence of pinholes, protrusions, cracks, grooves, and sufficient elasticity. Carelessly replacing a seal when there is an oil leak will definitely cause problems.#different types of drills#

II. Is it okay to just slip on a good-quality sealing ring?

When replacing a sealing ring, the open parts of the hydraulic system should be thoroughly cleaned first, and impurities and dirty oil should be strictly prevented from entering the system. During installation, a special tool should be used to prevent scratches from sharp metal edges or even fingernails. It is not allowed to directly slip the sealing ring over the threaded part of the component. In special cases, a simple installation tool should be made or the threaded part should be wrapped with plastic film, and clean hydraulic oil of the same type should be applied to the tool or film. The statement "just slip it on" is actually incorrect.

III. Is it okay to just leave spare sealing rings lying around?#different types of drills#

Because sealing rings contain many additives, they are prone to aging and deterioration. Therefore, when storing them, avoid sunlight, moisture, and heat, and be careful not to let them come into contact with acidic or alkaline substances. Generally, their shelf life should not exceed 1.5 years. They should not be strung together with rope or wire for storage. Therefore, it is not acceptable to just leave spare sealing rings lying around.

IV. "The oil's dirty, just throw it away!"

Besides the rancid and deteriorated hydraulic oil, a significant amount of hydraulic oil and lubricating oil is still usable. Hydraulic oil that's merely mixed with metal particles can be reused after sedimentation and filtration. Heavily contaminated oil, after simple treatment, can be used for lubrication of rough machining equipment and rust prevention of outdoor equipment, or waste oil can be collected and turned over for waste oil recycling, thus saving energy and reducing waste. While "just dumping it away" is convenient, it pollutes the environment and violates the principles of sustainable development.#different types of drills#
